Изучением интеллекта и интеллектуальных возможностей человека давно занимаются ученые различных специализаций. Один из основных вопросов, стоящих перед психологией — это вопрос является ли интеллект врожденным или формируется в зависимости от окружающей среды.
Интеллектуальные способности зависят от массы мозга, причем, чем больше масса, тем человек умнее, установили ученые из Университета МакМастера (Канада). В исследовании нейрофизиологов под руководством Сандры Вительсон приняли участие сто добровольцев, страдающих неизлечимыми заболеваниями, но сохранивших ясность ума. Врачи заручились предварительным согласием пациентов на посмертное вскрытие и манипуляции с органами. При жизни всем участникам провели тестирование интеллектуальных способностей. После смерти каждого участника ученые извлекали и взвешивали головной мозг. Выяснилось, что вербальные способности женщин напрямую зависят от массы мозга. Женщины с более тяжелым мозгом имели более высокий IQ по результатам проведенных тестов. У мужчин такая же зависимость наблюдалась только среди праворуких субъектов.
Способность ориентироваться в пространстве также коррелировала с массой мозга у женщин, однако эта зависимость была менее выраженной. Что касается мужчин, то у них не было обнаружено никакой взаимосвязи между этими показателями. Ученые также установили, что в возрасте от 25 до 80 лет мозг мужчин уменьшается в размере, у женщин же этот размер остается неизменным. Причины, лежащие в основе этого явления, доподлинно не известны. В будущем ученые планируют определить, какую роль играют врожденные и приобретенные факторы в формировании мозга и развитии интеллектуальных способностей.
